Description

I bought 2 lens when I recently got my new Nikon D40X (Nikkor AF-S VR 18-55mm and AF-S VR 55-200mm). I have only used the 55-200mm very briefly for a few times. This is the only usable image I have managed to get so far with it and was taken at the 200mm end of the range using default auto settings from a distance of about 10-12 feet. The Bullfrog would fill up the palm of my hand. This shot was saved from the camera as a 3872x2592 - 3.8MB jpg image file. I reduced it to 1024x685 and saved it as a tiff. image that was 2.02MB. I did not crop it but I tweaked the contrasts just a bit, added a title, and saved it for the web as a 1024x724 jpg image that is 126kb. I like the shot and my pocket camera is useless for this size critter at this distance. I was surprised that I could not fill more of the frame with the frog. I thought the 200mm setting on the lens would get closer than it does. I did not use any close up lens. Even though I am learning more and more about my new camera, I am beginning to suspect that I am not rich enough to afford the various lenses that will do what I am trying to do, lol. I have leaned enough to realize that once I have become familiar with the D40X, this camera set-up will help me take better images than my old 7900 did and do some things the 7900 couldn't but it won't do some of the things I erroneously thought it would. I have almost decided to invest about another $100 and purchase a Vivitar 100mm f3.5 macro lens. I am waiting until Monday before I finalize that decision because I need to talk to the dealer and insure I can get a manual focus one with a Nikon mount and the matched close-up lens that brings it from 1:2 to 1:1 magnification. I have read a lot of reviews about this lens, and even though most remark that the Vivitar lens is cheaply constructed, they almost all say it is a bargain for beginners at this price because the optics are great. I know I am a beginner and think I am willing to spend the $100 to find out, lol. Thanks to those who take the time to comment. Lee

I think the main thing should be that you are ENJOYING your new kit, even while you find out all about it. But don't ditch the pocket one!

Try again - and then make a calendar, sell it for a galactic price, took your images to some exhibitions in some galleries and then you will be rich enough...that's my plans for the next mhhhmmm 20 years?! lol Great shot my friend.
