Description

This lane is between Falling Foss and The Hermitage. Note the old dry stone wall. Dry stone walls do not require any binding material such as mortar or cement to hold them together. Rather their strength comes through the correct selection and placement of stones. They also offer improved drainage compared to brick or mortared walls, particularly when used for retaining walls or raised beds. As well as being an environmentally-friendly building material, a well-built wall will require minimum maintenance and should last for dozens of years. Thank you for looking, as always any comments or suggestions welcome 8~) ** BEST VIEWED FULLSIZE ** Thank you for the comments on my last upload thumb_1880405.jpg

Nice dry stane syke, my friend. Mind you the stones seem much more regular than the ones we had to use ( fieldstone ) from my gran's farm in the Glens of Antrim, nearly 50 years ago. My great uncle and one of my mum's cousins let me help them one summer., although I didn't get to shear any sheep ( my twin did... ). Thanks for the nice warming image, my friend. Warm regards from a Glasgow that is a trifle wintry ( hailstones twice in the ast 24 hours! ), John.

Looks like a fun place to walk. Our area is patch worked by old stone walls- All from the ground they surround , often marking property borders. Excellent result

It looks like a beautiful spot for a walk. It's also interesting to note the different dry-stone wall technique between Yorkshire and the Lake District. The stones in this wall appear to be more conventionally block shaped than in the lakes, where they seem to use any stone that comes to hand. Nonetheless, they all last for years - in some cases, a century or more with only minimal maintenance. :-) Lovely photo.
