Description

Shiprock is the basalt core of an extinct volcano that erupted around 30 million years ago. It is roughly about 500m in diameter and rises about 600m above the surrounding terrain. The peak is 7178-ft. high. It is considered sacred by the Navajo who call it Tse Bitai (The Winged Rock). In the left foreground is a dike. A dike is a near-vertical wall-like body formed by the spreading apart of a vertical rock fracture. Dikes are commonly the conduits by means of which magma reaches the surface. Magma entering in the overlaying rock solidifies in a branching network of thin veins. There are several dikes spreading out from the Shiprock core. This picture was taken on 4 November 2003. Thank you for viewing and commenting, Sig....

The picture is wonderful, but I find myself more fascinated by your writeup. I had no idea of the origin of these formations. Knowing where they came from makes them enticing, riveting, mesmerizing, where before they were just big rocks on a flat plain. Thank you, my friend!
