Everything had gone from bad to worse. The only way out was to do something vile, to kill innocents. Tia bit her lip and spit. Emma could hear her teeth grinding even over the barked orders of the elven soldiers. The two bountyhunters lay dead at their feet. There was no denying the situation, no covering up what they had done. Even if they could prove the two had been Shadow agents, no one on this side of the border would listen.

But that’s where they were wrong. No sooner had they been stripped of their weapons and icons, their spell components and holy symbols, and thrown into cells to await their fate, than they received a visitor.

Ogrefork sat squarely on the edge of two Duchies, Southgaard and Lorvyn, and overlooked the border crossing into the Khang Empire. In effect, it belonged to no one, and that’s what made it perfect for trade and border crossings. But Southgaard had long been the holding of the Cardimonis clan, a noble family of Foxmoor elves that had already crossed the SGL once. In Lorvyn, however, the Duchess Dahlia Savedra controlled the eastern passages into the Pouarr Nation, and the majority of the border with the Khang Frontier. There was no love lost between the militant Cardimonis family, and the mystics of the Savedra line. But no one had expected the Lady of Light, the Duchess Savedra herself to personally take an interest in retrieving prisoners who had supposed helped a wanted criminal escape and had killed two officers of the court. A long list of charges against the SGL were no doubt being generated as they sat there staring at the back side of their cell bars. But the Lady of Light had other ideas. It was time for her to stand against the lengthening of shadows, and to defend the name of an old friend, even at the cost of her own throne.
