Description

Here are two items from the San Pelagio Castle and Museum. On the left there is a poster of the Italian WW1 air ace Francesco Baracca, and a model of his plane. Count Baracca had adopted as a personal emblem a black prancing horse, in tribute to his former cavalry regiment. He died after a total of 34 victories, before failing to return from a strafing mission in 1918. In later years, Baracca's father presented Baracca's prancing stallion emblem, the Cavallino Rampante to Enzo Ferrari. The rearing horse has been the official symbol of Scuderia Ferrari racing team since 1929, and of Ferrari automobiles since they began manufacture. On the left there is a door from Palazzo Traverso, at Grossa di Gazzo Padovano, a village north of Padova, very close to my grandfather's lands. Here there was an airstrip used by the 28th air squadron of the British Capt. Paynter. The words CYCLIST SOP mean that here they fixed the wheels of the Sopwith Camel planes. The British HQ officers were billeted at my grandfather's house, and when my dad was born in 1917 they presented my granny with a fox terrier named Titty. My father loved this dog beyond words and after many decades after his death, he still mentioned him very often. My granny was a friend of Baracca's and Enzo Ferrari's, and could visit the F1 boxes when she chose it. She was the second woman to get a car licence in Italy, and won the Milan-San Remo car race in 1922 with an Isotta-Fraschini. Flavia inherited her gold medal. BTW, also Hemingway was in the area at the time, and after he wrote about it.
