Description

(Best viewed full size!) Continuing on with the retexturing and new shaders for the characters in this series, it's Galen's turn. This is a straight render, NO postwork other than the logo! This is the same background set and lights used in the first makeover. Also, the metal, leather, velvet and skin surfaces are all using the exact same surface shaders I used for Aranée, with a few minor tweaks of course. A couple of notable departures from Aranée's makeover:
  • I used Mapps tileable cloth tex and / or bump maps on many of Galens clothing items, including the body of his tunic and his trousers in this pic. Galen doesn't have much clothing with "patterns", mostly just solid colors so this seemed the best choice. A HUGE thanks to Mike for his wonderful freebie stuff, I use it SO much.
  • The chain mail tex - is my own design! I think it turned out great. I used closeup photos of real historic chain mail to work up a combined tileable texture and displacement map. I also used omnifreaker's Human Surface Shader as a means of controlling the tiling frequency. I'm thinking about offering the mail effect as either a freebie shader or mat pose if anybody has an interest.
UPDATE: My 19yo son Ryan thought the clothing was still to flat. After looking at it a bit I thought he was right, so added a bit more displacement to the tunic and trousers. Well, what do you think of Galen's makeover? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - PS - FUN ITEM for Aranée fans: The next makeover will feature the remaining two characters who will reappear in future episodes. Can you guess who they are? (HINT: Only recurring characters are named...) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Image © 2009 Larry Hodge

Great work on the chainmail texture! Is he supposed to be holding the long dagger that way in his left hand? Can not decide on the skin texture though - it looks frozen but that may be his expression too.

I've actually done some martial arts weapons training, as well as studied a bit of medieval archaic weapons. A dagger hold would indeed place the guards at right angles to the thumb. It is a hold that emphasizes accuracy over power. The long weapon handles the power moves, the short weapon snakes in for serious damage - or for the kill.

On the dagger hold: I was trained to hold it like that, blade hoizontal and parallel to the ribcage, for quick insertion...usually from the rear. The same way one would hold the "commando" dagger of WWII. If I were going for the neck, I'd want a more positive grip: a different one. As to chain, I wore it (and plate) for years in the SCA. Chain does not conform to the muscles, it just hangs there. Thus the fit is very important. The cuffs would be a bit floppy, unless laced closed with leather or hempen cord (medievally speaking). Larry, if you want any more "real world" (ahem!) advice, drop me a note. An excellent render! -Allen

Larry, it looks like your makeover is a success! That chain mail looks terrific. PSDuck is absolutely right (I was in the SCA too). In "real life" chain mail just hangs limp and floppy and in general looks very un-sexy. Besides, a "realistic" ranger would probably not wear chain anyway - too heavy and difficult to maintain when traveling rough. So I say: take some artistic license! If it looks great, use it! Are we artists or historians here? As for the dagger, I would say that the grip is open to debate. What you picture is a classic "knife fighting" stance, where the dagger is to be used offensively as you describe. This was the way it was used in the late renaissance when rapier dueling was all the rage. In the late medieval and early renaissance, however, the dagger or "main gauche" was used as a parrying tool (easier to carry than a classic "buckler" shield) with "finishing moves" as only a secondary consideration. In that case, it was often held differently from the way you picture. But again, your depiction looks great and shows Galen's aggressiveness, so why not go ahead and stick with it? Bravo and great work! Looking forward to seeing more of Galen.
