I'm retired, but so busy I haven't posted anything in a while. When do work, I mostly use Carrara 8.5 Pro and Daz Studio for composition and rendering, and Fireworks and Photoshop for postwork and textures. I'm more a storyteller than an artist: I like scenes that tell a story -- or strongly suggest one.
I live in Sacramento, California USA with my wife. Kids are grown and gone, so we volunteer at our church, and travel as much as time and wallet will allow!
I REALLY appreciate the many great artists here who have been SO wonderful with their encouragement and pointers. PLEASE comment or just say "Hi". I appreciate your words good or bad: It energizes me, grows me - and keeps me going.

Great work on the chainmail texture! Is he supposed to be holding the long dagger that way in his left hand? Can not decide on the skin texture though - it looks frozen but that may be his expression too.

I've actually done some martial arts weapons training, as well as studied a bit of medieval archaic weapons. A dagger hold would indeed place the guards at right angles to the thumb. It is a hold that emphasizes accuracy over power. The long weapon handles the power moves, the short weapon snakes in for serious damage - or for the kill.

Absolutely gorgeous !!

On the dagger hold: I was trained to hold it like that, blade hoizontal and parallel to the ribcage, for quick insertion...usually from the rear. The same way one would hold the "commando" dagger of WWII. If I were going for the neck, I'd want a more positive grip: a different one. As to chain, I wore it (and plate) for years in the SCA. Chain does not conform to the muscles, it just hangs there. Thus the fit is very important. The cuffs would be a bit floppy, unless laced closed with leather or hempen cord (medievally speaking). Larry, if you want any more "real world" (ahem!) advice, drop me a note. An excellent render! -Allen

Larry, it looks like your makeover is a success! That chain mail looks terrific. PSDuck is absolutely right (I was in the SCA too). In "real life" chain mail just hangs limp and floppy and in general looks very un-sexy. Besides, a "realistic" ranger would probably not wear chain anyway - too heavy and difficult to maintain when traveling rough. So I say: take some artistic license! If it looks great, use it! Are we artists or historians here? As for the dagger, I would say that the grip is open to debate. What you picture is a classic "knife fighting" stance, where the dagger is to be used offensively as you describe. This was the way it was used in the late renaissance when rapier dueling was all the rage. In the late medieval and early renaissance, however, the dagger or "main gauche" was used as a parrying tool (easier to carry than a classic "buckler" shield) with "finishing moves" as only a secondary consideration. In that case, it was often held differently from the way you picture. But again, your depiction looks great and shows Galen's aggressiveness, so why not go ahead and stick with it? Bravo and great work! Looking forward to seeing more of Galen.
