Description


This range is on the Navajo Reservation north of Winslow. If this were Federal Land, leased out to a rancher, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) would determine how many head of cattle the land could sustain. Rangeland like this would support about one head, maybe two head of cattle per square mile. I don't know how the Navajo determine sustainability. This picture was taken on 31 October 2003. How can these cows survive ? That's the question I'm always asking when I get there. It's a fabulous place ; but despite the beauty of the place it's a poor and dangerous land.
