Description

This very ominous cloud formation touched down and wreaked havoc across the lake from us. This is from the same line of storms that gave me Sky's on Fire. With severe weather season upon us it's good to put in perspective how fast a situation can change.

The sirens are blaring, the weather radio's going nuts announcing all of the watches and warnings, we've just had quarter size hail recently end,.....and where is our photographer? Up on the back porch taking this shot!!! Keep in mind please, that this is the same woman who's scared to death of heights and ittie bittie spiders!!

This is such a "Midwestern Shot." Needless to say I love it. I have a healthy respect for the stuff Mother Nature throws at Tornado Alley, and whenever I see thunderheads with that characteristic anvil shape, I usually start looking for northwest corners in basements. This shot has that sort of feel to it, though I'm glad to see that the sky is a nice, bright shade of sunset amber, rather than the more dangerous tornado green that Chicago gets on occasion. Great contrast, fantastic, ominous mood, and as with other stuff I've seen in your gallery, a perfect eye for crisp and evocative silhouettes. Needless to say, this is one of my favorites.

outstanding capture. I seen some clouds yesterday looking like a funnel but there was no top.by the time I was able to shoot, it had blown away

yep, this is a wonderful Midwestern storm alright. People from the east don't believe us till they see one (or its aftermath). That cloud looks like a tornado; and you got the eerie Night & Day combo, the way the day turns to midnight in minutes; and yet there are breaks in the clouds & day suddenly shines through. Yet that 'day' is so eerie and strangem you feel you're in some horrible purgatory! Isn't it amazing how these come, the day turns to hell, and in seconds the sky unleashes fury; the winds roar and rains pelt like mad and branches fly and even some trees fall down....and then it stops (whoosh!), the sun comes out and everything breathes afresh...and the place is freakin' inundated with water? You got the scene perfectly. Terrific midwestern capture...
