Description

On friday evening, may 8th...it looked like a giant had taken a stroll through our little town in southeast Missouri. Trees were uprooted and laying over on everything..like someone had pulled them up and placed them on houses, or cars and laid some out side by side in yards and along the sides of the roads. Roof shingles, awnings, etc. were thrown around everywhere...It looks like a tornado came thru but I've been in tornados and I knew this was different. The meteorologist called it a "weather phenomenon" known as a "derecho" -- straight line hurricane strength wind. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derecho We had no electricity for 5 days and there are still people here who have no electricity. My sister came to stay with me while her husband was out of town and we literally camped out in my living room and made coffee on the front porch using a coleman camp stove. :D These pictures, taken by my sister, are a very small part of the overall sights around here. I am sorry I am soooo far behind everywhere but I'm going to catch up to everyone as soon as I can..

Wow! I've seen those winds, but conifers and bare branches can take them. We mostly lost fences and trash cans to them over the years, and before they made tougher regs, flimsier roofs and mobile homes not tied down enough. Those are some amazing trees you lost. Glad to hear you're OK, and must say, I missed you.

Oh That must have been terrifying! At least with a hurricane you have warning and can prepare. I hope your house and property survived without much damage. Great photos.

How odd, in North Carolina, hurricane country, they call those types of winds "Micro-Bursts". Praise God and Goddess that you and your sister are well and safe, and that your home is ok. Or at least ok to live in. Take care of yourself and let the RF gang know soon.

Know what you mean, I am up in the Murphysboro/Carbondale area, looked like a battle zone here, not just blown over trees but splintered trees also. Excellent captures!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, Annie. Awesome photos. I'm glad you are okay. This was not a micro-burst according to that link you provided. High winds really spook me out. After an unexpected visit from hurricane Hugo and two weeks without power years ago I sympathize with you.
