Description

While photographing birds over the weekend I ran across this mystery bird. I've been unable to classify it. Does anyone know what it might be? It sorta looks like he was flying over a can of spray-paint when it exploded.

I'm going to agree with morningglory (who knows her stuff), this matches up fairly well with an illustration in my field guide to Birds of North America that is labeled Summer Tanager, male, first spring. Excellent photo on your part!

What a rare and beautiful species! Almost the looks of a cardinal, but not quite so... I don't think I've ever seen a bird so beautifully marked.... beautiful lighting and capture!

I'll have to trust the bird experts on the ID for this ownderful capture. Of course it could be a new species and then you would name it "pictorus avitus." Don't think there is a Latin word for "spray."
