Description
This little beastie was about as thick as my thumb and about four inches long. I have no idea what it will turn out to be so maybe Danny or someone else can identify it for me. I must say it is the largest one I have ever seen. Taken at the Butterfly Farm, Stratford-upon-Avon.
Alan and I plan on a re visit on the 8th of June; this coming Saturday we are at the 1940's weekend at the East Lancs Railway, lots of steam and WWII re-enactments, on Monday we travel to the City of Chester for a walk about.
Thanks for stopping by for a look and for any comments you care to make.
Please zoom for full effect, bottom left is pretty near to actual size.

Outstanding collection of images Jeff, this was indeed an impressive caterpillar! I'm all set for the days out, it seems that it is all or nothing with a few trips arranged within a short space of time, lol can't contain myself!

Wonderful shots!!!

Wonderful at least such large Larvae are not that common and this looks rather like the last stage of the Luna Moth larva which is more sertiferous and such large caterpillars are rare in butterflies apart from ones like the Spice Bush or some swallow tails

Truly remarkable work Jeff.

Wow, great series!
e-brink
Wow! It probably turns into a dragon.
Leeco
I agree with e-brink. I think it may be a dragon, lol. I really don't know what it will be. Caterpillars go through as many as 5-6 molting phases and each phase can look totally different so it can be very confusing as to an ID but one this big is almost sure to be a later stage instar. Maybe you will see him flying in June, lol. Lee

Excellent capture my friend.
MrsLubner
I'm like Danny...I was thinking that only the Luna moth could produce something this large. The caterpillar goes through so many different changes and appearances that I can't be sure but it almost has to be one. Outstanding shots!

Very good shots and composition.

Oh guys, I'm sorry but it's not a luna moth. I've raised a luna moth caterpillar through the pupa and into the moth stage and the larvae do not have "hair". Unfortunately I don't know what it really is.
