Description

The Secret Garden at the San Pelagio Castle and villa is a kind of Romantic garden that seems inspired to the Gardenesque type of picturesque garden. In a Gardenesque plan, all the trees, shrubs and other plants are positioned and managed in such a way that the character of each plant can be displayed to its full potential. The Gardenesque approach involved the creation of small-scale landscapes, dotted with features and vignettes, to promote beauty of detail, variety and mystery, sometimes to the detriment of coherence. Here the garden shows some statues to enhance the picturesque POVs of the micro-landscapes; the stone statues are typical of the 18th century gardens in this region, with nymphs and dwarfs. They have been copied since then and you can still see them in the small gardens of the residential neighborhoods. This way an old craft has been preserved. Thank you for your kind comments.

Colorful shot. Glad you went into the gardening design here. I've done a little studying concerning landscape architecture...although you'd never know it from my yard:) Long Island (NY) in the early 20th century had more than 1000 palacial estates along its' north shore. The big debate was should US gardens in the early 20th century be copies of European gardens (English, French and Italian) or should they evolve into a new form? New forms tended to win out...but the in-thing for the wealthy estate owners was to have Italian gardeners...they were deemed to be the best at that time.
