I remember you mentioning before on your self-portrait that a ringflash seems to bring out 'flaws' and 'imperfections' (for want of better phrases)... why is that?

My understanding is that it is because the shadow is created at the centre of any dimple/pore or "imperfection" and that centre is where you are pointing the lens (as you are shooting through the light). It also has to do with the fact that the lighting is more diffuse than a flash and thus detail is picked up that wouldnt have shown if you were to use a point source (ie normal flash) pointed straight at the subject. Also - the processing i used on both this and the self portrait is designed to bring out detail like that (blue channel heavy b+w conversion) as well as not normally seen pigmentation imperfections and freckles...
