Description
Perhaps this is what a mountain on jupiter would look like.. or if jupiter was hit by a spectacularly purple asteroid?
Maybe not.. Milk + purple/yellow dye and some 'swirling'

brilliant colours and amazing capture, any tips on how to get such great shots? I was thinking about having a go with water tonight but watch TV instead, how sad is that??

Strangely enough I was going to do some more myself but find myself watching mythbusters... 2 Things... Depth of field.. I find I need around 6mm DOF for these shots and around 12mm for ones with the splash on top.. Generally I shoot at F16 so with my 55mm (M42 screw fit) lens + 12mm extension tube that means shooting at 29cm away. With the 100mm Macro that's about 49cm. http://eosdoc.com/jlcalc/ <-- for working this stuff out Sharpness.. Bit harder. You need to freeze the motion, Because a SLR uses a sliding shutter it does not 'freeze' very well. The way I do it is to use a 2 second exposure in a dimly lit room and use a flash you can set to Very low power (I use a vivitar 255 or vivitar 283 (thanks dad). Low power = quick flash. For the drops I use a mariotte siphon (see my setup here) http://www.flickr.com/photos/drippy2009/3554661061/ This shot was taken with milk + dye. THEN.. Hold a cup under the stream of drops, trigger the camera, remove the cup and then fire the flash. (Cup means the ripples have time to settle) THEN do it lots and lots and lots of time.. think I've taken around 7000 shots in 4 months.
