First real try at masking and its not easy so anybody with a good tutorial on masking can you please let me have it i find it so hard to grasp it.

It's a real good start! The greatest difficulty I have with masks is to get the gradient to behave. That and I always get the transparent/solid colors inverted the first time (one of the best tips I got was to use the Gradient-Invert option to reverse the mask in such cases).
