Description

AlooooooooooHa~ I enjoyed my day off today and my hats off to all who served in the Armed Forces! I was interested in shooting some HDR at night just to experiment and to walk around Hilo town. I called Errol aka Sharky to see if he wanted to go...He was game as he usually is so we met in town and did some night shooting. Thanks Sharky for having my back while I shot last night. HDR at night poses a whole new set of problems as I found out after downloading my images. I shoot in RAW all of the time and the process time as you might guess is almost twice as long to process each image in the camera especially with long exposures. It also takes longer to download to the puter, quite a lengthy process as most of you might know. After the full download you still don't know if you got anything. This is a shot of the Palace theater in Hilo town. The Palace was built and opened in 1925 at the peak of the heyday for American movie palaces. It was originally part of a small family of theaters owned and operated by Adam C. Baker, a dashing Hawaiian gentleman who was the nephew of the last royal governors of the island of Hawaii. Adam Baker had been involved in the theater business since the early 1900s and was a well-known showman in Hawaii. The Palace was built on a scale that had never been seen outside of the capital city of Honolulu, and it was always the grandest theater on all the neighbor islands. One unusual feature was that the Palaces structure was entirely of redwood, imported from the Pacific Northwest. Fourteen huge redwood columns supported the wooden roof trusses which span the entire width of the building. The roof, sides and back were sheathed in corrugated sheet metal, a very typical construction style in tropical Hawaii. The buildings façade is an elegant neo-classical design executed in stucco with wood molding accents. As with most of my images, full size viewing is prefered. Thanks for having a look, have a peaceful week everyone...Aloha~

I love this shot; it looks a lot like our theater here in Fortuna. And your mention of redwood is coincidental as well--I saw some old surf/paddle boards on display in Kona also made of redwood. Quite a trip that wood made; the redwoods are my backyard!!

Amazing how deserted the streets are, even for night time. Great shot Dave. We need more of these kinds of shots so we can remember the old days. Hope you are having a good time off. Aloha

After a hard fast ride on the Harley that day, I'm glad you called me for this night shooting. Its amazing for this movie theater to have survive two tidal waves and come back. Its a land mark for us. It is now used for entertain, musical concerts and plays. It was a worth while trip....thanks for calling me. Maika'i.... Aloha

A HDR to be proud of. Lovely. I find that a little gaussian blur can help with the grains in the sky which is often an issue with HDR. But thats not a complaint...just an idea!

First thing I noticed was how close to the ocean this is and how there is not a lot of cliff to help keep its feet dry in storms. Amazing! and the HDR turned out so well. Vibrant and "whole." Your information is really captivating.
