A completely different interpretation could be that they are friendly to each other. The serpent, if sentient, could even be a mentor. I suggest this because he doesn't seem "at-the-ready" to me. Even the most confidently skilled warrior would have his own muscles coiled to defend or strike. That's almost a warning stance to take when the serpent is on the other side of the room and not literally a foot away. Composition is good. Only other issue is that man and beast cast no shadows of their own.
