Description
I beg your pardon,
I never promised you a rose garden.
Along with the sunshine,
There's gotta be a little rain sometimes.
Rose Garden, 1970– written by Joe South, sung by country legend Lynn Anderson)
The Victorians invented the formal rose garden where they could display their horticultural prowess. Such gardens are still popular in municipal parks and in the gardens of rose breeding enthusiasts. Edwardians craved a rural idyll to capture the romance of the countryside within the confines of the ever-expanding urban and suburban landscape. It was a period of prosperity and this was reflected in the exuberant gardening styles. Informal planting schemes were mixed with formal, structured landscaping. This included herbaceous borders with drifts of colour, as suggested by Gertrude Jekyll, and informal woodland planting schemes using native and exotic plants, as recommended by William Robinson. The Italian Renaissance-style also enjoyed a revival through architects such as Inigo Triggs and Harold Peto.
Lyme Park features 17 acres of enjoyable Victorian gardens, including a sunken parterre (the Dutch Garden), an Edwardian rose garden (on the left of the photo), a ravine garden, Jekyll-style herbaceous borders(in between), and a conservatory designed by James Wyatt(on the right). The estate surrounding the Italianate house stretches to an enormous 1400 acres, with a deer park that existed in the medieval period, moorland, and park containing a hunting tower built in the 18th century.

Beautiful and historic gardens. A collage makes a mighty fine display tool. I can just imagine the hundreds of man-hours each week that must go into these gardens.
