Description

Scarborough Castle's tall keep, barbican, and great curtain wall dominate the Yorkshire headland above the town and harbor of Scarborough. Built during 1136-1212 by William le Gros, King Henry II, and King John, this royal castle was important in national and local politics and defense throughout the Middle Ages, but was badly damaged by Parliamentarian cannon in 1645. A great POV, and a clean, sharp, sun blest capture, my friend. I was based in Scarborough on the usual whistle-stop coach tour, last year, after major surgery. I did get as far as Miss Bronte's grave, just below the castle, but on both occasions the castle closed. I would not have liked to approach it from the sea, under fire, and I suppose that was the point of siting it on this headland. Parliamentary mortars would have had a fair bit of work to do. The east winds were whistling last summer, and the white horses and 'haar' much in evidence. There was some sun in a trip south to Beverley, and up in the North Yorkshire Moors 'Heartbeat' country, to cheer me up a bit. This sparks a few memories. Thanks, my friend, John.

Wonderful photo...I thought the round holes still evident on the right side must have been made by cannon.
