Description
"Yttrium? What is it?" Eve asked dumbfounded.
"It's a metal. I've been doing my homework,"JS smiled. "It's a key component of communication systems in the hyperspace. This is the reason why Yttrium is the heart's desire for both Rogues and Eartheners. Yttrium is very rare and it's generated by giant red stars... as yours here. Well, you're sitting on a huge deposit of Yttrium ore, with no legal owner. Are you sure you don't know anything about it?"
"I'm in the dark about it. Adam or Peter may know something" Eve replied. Then she and JS agreed to appoint Adam as the official representative of New Mars. Eve, however, had better be the intepreter, keeping the queen self hidden at the moment. Then they went to meet the others: hugs, cheeck-pecking and excited unwrapping of gifts.
"What do you know about Yttrium ore deposits?" Eve asked Adam.
"Absolutely nothing. But Peter has a cousin living in the north country, near the Rainbow Mountains (JS identified them as area the SMs had dubbed Godforsaken Lands). This cousin of his says that they had troubles over there".
"What kind of troubles?" JS inquired.
Adam shrugged and shook his head. "It's that cousin living at the Ka-ne-sha crossroads" he told Eve.
"It isn't far" Eve informed JS, whose mood was sensibly darkened. "If you have a fast means of transport we can go there and be back before sunset." She suggested.
"Let's go then" said JS.
Peter's cousin, Ke-sha and his wife were ranchers. They welcomed JS and Eve with slugh salami, a local delicatesse, and Martian beer. They were happy that a top brass from Bradburyton had bothered to deal with them and listen to the complaints of the Martians. Which were many.
"Is it true that there are troubles at the Rainbow Mts?"
Ke-sha nodded. "Seasonal hands told me that in the northern isolated ranches they have been plagued by slugh deaths."
"Murrain?" JS asked.
"No, unless you dub it a herd slaughtered by plasma and laser waepons."
"What type of plasma weapons, ours or Rogue?" JS asked. He knew that wealty Eartheners with spleen often bribed poachers to hunt slughs.
Ke-sha shrugged. "I don't know. I can't tell the difference."
JS and Eve thanked him and JS promised he would do what he could about the mile-long list of complaints.
They were already astride the hoverbike, when Ke-sha's wife yelled: "Wait! My son gave me this object. One of the northern farm-hand's daughter gave him it as a present." She said, and gave JS a medallion.
JS looked at it and his mood grew even darker.
It was a badge belonging to the Centurions of the Traditional Authonomous Republic (TAR), which GOD's people had creatively anagrammatized as RAT, for Rogue Allied Thugs.

Well, you explained the Yttrium! I didn't remember that part. And apparently some characters were puzzled by it too. (So it wasn't just me! Nice way you ended with it in the last installment...) (Off topic: The whole "Y-T-T" spelling just bothers me. Like the people making up these names had downed one too many Grappas, and decided "let's use the most arcane spellings in the world, so no one will remember these names to save their lives...") (It comes from the name of the town where a similar element was first found; but still...that spelling leaves a lot to be desired...) But back to the story! So now we're taken to this place out in the Godforsaken Lands, and we get more delightful snippets---this time of the complaints of the people out there, intimations of more usury and abuse by other powers, planting seeds (maybe) for future conflicts to be resolved, and peppered with some delightful details like "slugh salami" and Martian Beer. I don't remember "slughs" from previous episodes, but I assume it's a Martian creature and not related to the "slug" (ie, the worm)...And in any case, the "h" on the end looks like a strange spelling of something, so I assume it's Martian. Love your details. And the medallion spells more possible story lines in the future---nicely done. (Btw, I took a break between the last image and this, in case you're even looking at the times here...) In the image, more of your imagination: Ke-sha has almost Mayan decoration on his body---nice---he's a rather fierce looking guy (with what looks like Wolverine boots!), and I love the beer bottle. Love the details here. There's something in the background---behind him---that looks a little like a metal dog on a leash attached to the house: I don't know if I'm even close, but that's what it looks like. Your background mountains/rock formations seem to have caves in them, with statuary like some of the Buddhist cave-statuary in Afghanistan and other regions. (Where monumental buddhas are carved into rock facades.) Fascinating, whatever they are...And Ke-sha's wife is the center of the piece, with Eve and JS on the right on that amazing vehicle (all covered in camouflage decoration). And Eve's now wearing a leather jacket, and both of them are staring at the medallion---which I guess is airborne? Fascinating exchange. And btw, Eve's and KS's-wife's boots both have great textures---textured leather, maybe? Love those textures...and you've got a bolt of lightning aiming at Eve and JS---a nice touch. A creative and fun image with lots of fun details (I looked for a slugh salami, but didn't find it. I'm vegetarian, mind you, so I wouldn't be eating a lot of the stuff, but I'm dying to see what it looks like...) More creative work from you, Flavia. Btw, I haven't fav'd anything---I'm forgetting to do that more and more, these days: But everything's a fav here. I'll fav all the pieces when I finish.
