Description
Situated to the south of Stoke-on-Trent, Trentham was the estate village for Trentham Hall, the former country house of the Dukes of Sutherland. Trentham Hall developed over several centuries: ‘Capability’ Brown re-landscaped the 750 acre park in the 18th century, and in 1833 Charles Barry commissioned the Italian flower Garden. The lower part of this garden has been redesigned. While the magnificent Italian Gardens remain true to Charles Barry’s original creation for the Duke of Sutherland, this is much more than a conventional restoration project. The team at Trentham are breathing new life into the Gardens, with design and Iconic perennial planting. The house was demolished in 1911 by its owner, but the gardens and the park with its lake and woodlands have been preserved. One of the reasons for the demolition of the house was pollution of the River Trent. The gardens were the site of the Trentham Ballroom, which opened in 1931 and closed in 2002. A host of dance, rock and pop bands performed at Trentham Ballroom, including The Who and Led Zeppelin. Today there is a wonderful flower market just before the gate to the gardens.
The bronze statue of the Perseus and Medusa is a copy of that by Benvenuto Cellini in Florence (1545-54).
