Description

In the 16th century, throughout European courts a new fashion rages : collecting plants of lemons and oranges and planting orangeries in the parks of palaces and castles. Lemons originate from India, but the name comes to us from Persia; they were first cultivated in Genoa, Italy, around mid-14th century. Oranges were introduced from southeastern Asia into Europe before lemons, that is in the 11th century. It was a bitter variety coming from Persia. Sweet oranges, however, which are the most common today, came from India, imported by the Portuguese only in the 15th century. The name of the color orange derives from the fruit and appears first in 1542. The botanical gardens of the universities are contemporary to orangeries, and they were often built in the area of aristocratic parks. The first botanical garden in the world appeared in Padova, Italy in 1525. As early as 1545 an orangery was built there. In the collage you can see the oranges and lemons of the orangerie and conservatory at Villa Pisani, Stra (Venice), 15 kms from Padova, built in the 18th century in a blend of French and Venetian styles of gardens. During spring and summer they stay outside.

Excellent collage and info Sandra. It's definitely interesting to see all the 'fashion rages' that have occurred over the centuries - some things never seem to go out of fashion.
