****WARNING!!!**** A *brief* history lesson.... This cabin is the oldest building in this part of PA. It was built in 1732. Here was where the first school ever to be held in this part of, what was then, frontier America met. In this, the Ministers study. Reading was a main subject. Since the Scots-Irish pioneers thought everyone should be able to read the bible. In 1741 the land was deeded to the Derry Presbyterian Congregation by the sons of William Penn. John, Thomas & Richard. The Rev. John Elder, the famous "Fighting Parson" who was active during the French & Indian and Revolutionary Wars, was Pastor of Derry Church from 1746-1791. The protective glass enclosure was built in 1929 by Mr.M.S.Hershey. Founder of Hersheys chocolate and the town of Hershey Pa. The earliest grave in the nearby cemetery is dated 1735. At least 40 Revolutionary War soldiers were laid to rest here.
