Description
In this image I wanted to not focus on the Maya woman washing, but to expand upon the scene setting itself. Surrounded by beautiful jungle and wildflowers, an old Maya woman (84) washes her laundry in the almost-dry river bed. She wanted to wash clothes, but her family considered her too old. She told me that she was not too old and that no one should tell her when to stop washing. So the village women asked if I didn't mind looking after her while she was at the river. I took the opportunity to photograph her, and she gave me her permission.
I regularly washed clothes in rivers and streams with Maya women and have many detailed photographs of this work. But two of my favorites were these far-away shots because they show the surrounding beauty. I was often asked how we wash our clothes in America, and I would sometimes tell them, "Our way is not so beautiful as yours..."

Stunning image. What a beautiful composition. I especially noticed the reflection of the Mayans women bucket in the background.
