Description

Pre-digital camera, Fujichrome transparency film, transparency converted to digital using a general-purpose scanner. The image was then sharpened and a slight posterize filtering used to highlight the textural detail. The intention was to retain the integrity of the photograph. Is this proposal of a dedicated series a good idea? The title indicates a desire to differentiate by indicating composition as a key motivation when taking the picture. Composition must always be amongst the first considerations of photographers for thereby they achieve order and hopefully assist the understanding or appreciation of others and enable the transmission of thought from creator to viewer. Here the drums are the focal point with the "shunned" one offering titling possibilities. But the edge of the "platform" in the bottom corner is essential for linkage and balance purposes with the intricate ground detail making for an intriguing visual exploration elsewhere. This linkage seems essential when the key elements couldnt be placed more widely apart. Mind you, composition cannot be separated from subject matter. A quarry is rarely an expected repository of beauty. There has to be a work-a-day bleakness prevalent when discarded or much used equipment is everywhere. That is a part of the sense of place," and it is for you to make photographic sense of it all, and perhaps conjure some new kind of satisfaction. Youll also need to tolerate my old-fashioned approach. Experience encumbers and shapes our present: yours and mine. Cliff.
