Description
Labyrinths and mazes represent blindness and light, temptation and chaos, and satisfaction for those who brave the perils of the unknown. The maze at Villa Pisani has a little tower at its center, with an external staircase which winds about it as in a some seashells. Inside it’s empty, with arched openings at different height, and probably it was ideal for hosting trysts and intimate picnics! Here I give another view – a little solarized collage- of the maze, from the central turret: it’s amazing how the perspective changes from the vertical one of the winding path to the horizontal one from the turret. The path is tricky, because you can see the turret near, but if you take the turns that seem to go closer, you bump into a dead end. Actually, you have to wind around the most external turns in order to get nearer the center and at last reach it. If you can’t do it after a reasonable span of time, a person from the park personnel at the turret guides you to the center, shouting left, right, you’re OK. On the turret there is the statue of Minerva, goddess of wisdom and science, which may mean that you sometimes have to go farther from (conventional) wisdom, in order to get it. At least this is the meaning I reckon.
