Description

Thought you might enjoy seeing my rock garden. When we moved to the mountains from California, I did everything wrong in my garden. Every tree, bush, and flower I planted got blown away, and what didn't was killed by the snow. And all my green plastic planters cracked. It was a basic disaster. I got very tired of replacing plants every spring, only to see them die in the winter. So a few weeks ago I decided to re-do everything, and use natural items from the land, like dead tree branches, gnarled trunks, pine and aspen logs, and semi-precious rocks that were on the property covered in dirt. The previous owners made jewelry and collected semi-precious rocks. The land is loaded with them, but most were covered. So we collected them and made them into gardens. We added a bird house theme. The big log planters in the front of the house have all kinds of bulbs and wildflowers that bloom spring and summer. In the side garden planter I planted poppies and wildflowers that are not yet blooming. But mostly it has gnarled wood, bird houses, and these really neat pine branches that are covered with masses of tiny pine cones. The squirrels and chipmunks love running all over the logs and are really fun to watch. My mountain landscaping was a lot of work, but it now shows off the rocks that sparkle in the sun and are all kinds of wonderful colors and textures. And the best part is - I finally have a garden for all seasons. Hope you enjoy.:o) CC ZOOM for details

wow, you sure do love birds and rocks :-) It is BEAUTIFUL ! I wish I had a garden like that. But we live in the middle of the city so I only have a very small piece of nature. Fantastic work. You must really come to peace, sitting there, enjoying nature, the birds.... I know I would... Hugs Dueña

It's beautiful Carol, and your effort paid off. I love the alternation between open spaces and clusters; the variety of nature-made & human-made entities; the respect for the flow of the soil (and pebbles)—as the Japanese do so well—and the colonies of intense activity with your rocks and trees and birdhouses etc all bound into what almost looks like a temple to the shamanistic gods & goddesses of the forest. You used wood so well (to harmonize with the wood of the house), I like that you gathered all this from the detritus of your area, and I especially love the area circled by a 'ritual' winding path of small wooden posts/tree trunk-type stubs with all that wood inside. And it all blends at various vistas with the beauty of the forest. Human-made but wild, I loved this when you first posted it and I love it even more now. I'll stop for now, but at least I've caught up with several examples of your wonderful offerings over the last 2 months; and with this garden in mind, I'm going to leave my windows (overlooking high rises) and dream of a big deep forest! Wonderful work Carol, as always.

This is a superb series of photos, and I love the written description as well. Chicago can learn a few lessons from you. We have palm trees here now, in front of the only surviving building from the Chicago Fire, no less...it's a travesty, far worse than the amusement park quality of kitsch that Buckingham Fountain has become! But ah, I digress...that happens quite a lot when I start thinking on a riff and then forget what I was originally going to say. I love the fact that you've incorporated natural elements into your design. Fantastic, and beautifully captured.

I love how you planned your garden to meld into the woodland that surrounds it so well, and naturally so. It looks to be a very homely cosy place, and would love to see it when the wild flowers and poppies bloom, it will be breathtaking. You will certainly be inspired by your beautiful surroundings. hugs Jane xx
