One of the main features of the maze at Villa Pisani is the continuous play of illusions: for example, one has to go farther from the center in order to reach it. From a horizontal point of view, the chiaroscuro effect of the hedges, as well as the shadows of the turret stair causes us a kind of wonder feeling. The hedges are higher than people, but you can see the walking heads from the above. The park is surrounded by a wall, but at the most pretty views, artful openings allow the visitor to admire them from the outside. In front of the maze there are two openings, and the maze looks much lower and smaller. It's another illusion: in fact the path along the wall is on a level higher than that of the maze. I took this photo last December, when the sun was setting and by sheer luck I was at the right place at the right time, that is when the last rays of the sun went through the facing openings of the turret.
