Description

This baby Spotted Eagle Ray was cruising along the shoreline in just 4 feet of water. I had just docked my boat and walked down the pier to the beach when I saw it. I was able to capture 5 shots before he saw me and swam away. He was approximately 18 inches wide, but it was the long tail that surprised me. I have seen a lot of Spotted Eagle Rays, but never this small--and I did not know that the juvenile tail was so long. Only because the water was slick-calm that day, was I able to angle the lens just right to shoot through the water's surface without a polarizing filter. This image is a 'pure shot'...that means 100% UNRETOUCHED.

Regarding wingnut55's comment (thank you): Yes, it is "just about perfect"...and I was fortunate that day, as 'pure shots' for me only come 1/1000. I believe as the Japanese, that "flaws make art live"...and so I left that little bright reflective spot next to the upturned wing for this reason. Enlarge it and you will see this spot to the left of the lower wing in the seagrass. It interferes visually with the Eagle Ray's well-defined spots....though I left it to keep the image pure, and let the flaw make it 'live'. It seems the beauty of this ray's graceful movement is perfection in itself. To Tennesseecowgirl: I live in the Florida Keys, and it's a secret place...a private beach. BTW, do you see him looking back at me? This was the last shot before he departed. I suppose I was the "alien" (with a shiny instrument) for this little baby ray. ;-) Thank you for the kind comments!

100% awesome capture!!! This is really cool, and I'm so glad you shared it with us. Nature is always so much better when it's actually in nature! When one begins to realize that so many of the animals in the Zoo's really have no natural habitat to go back to, in order to just exist, is a bit saddening. It's great to have the opportunity to view another life where it belongs. Thank you for sharing this amazing creature with us.

I've never seen this type of ray before, either in the Gulf or down at St. John. Great camera work....such a crisp shot , and from above the surface, yet. Just don't let 'Einstein' hitch a ride on its back. ;)

Beautiful! I live on the water as well. I have a great shot of a broken surfboard gliding over a submerged shopping cart.

Once again… the water world is a special place Nice capture…. The wonders of nature never disappoint, and the creatures within make the best subjects to photograph. Unlike us humans, they never criticize or comment, they present themselves for the brief moment, and the captures through our lenses is all the reward they want. I was very fortunate to have had a boat, live at the coast, and spend a lot of time in their world. But that is in the passed, and my new adventures are in the bush. Keep them coming. Love to see more of Your work

When I first saw this image, it seemed so perfect that I thought it must be a ray tracing. When I realized it was a photograph, I was blown away!
