Description

Motto: "The time has come," the Walrus said, "To talk of many things: Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax-- Of cabbages--and kings" Lewis Carroll - Jaberwocky All the TV news, and front pages in the world display these days the tragedy of the Airbus plane sunk into the Atlantic Ocean with over 200 people on board. Such a tragedy would certainly move anyone, even if he were a foreigner and didn't know the victims. There is something in the human nature, which makes us feel sadness and compassion for such a terrible loss of lives. But Romanians seem to have found a handy antidote to the overflowing feeling of sadness following such a piece of news. Leaving aside the trifling fact that a Romanian woman was on that plane, newspaper editors sunk the news of the plane crash to page 6, and chose to place a fashion model in distress on the front page. Apparently, the damsel in question was chased off the set of a TV show by the host. To add to the insult a heavier tone, the invective "ill-bred" was added for good measure, and duly published by all media. Now then, this is a piece of news of the most serious nature! A terrible crime, infamous, inexcusable, and worthy of our attention. To hurt the poor girl's ego, to sully her picture perfect public image - leaving aside an X-rated movie from her high school days, and yet another X-rated movie, showing her performing a sexual act of an oral nature to the benefit of her 30-year-older millionaire husband in a restaurant. What is the death of 228 people, compared to this tragedy? Nothing, seem to think the news editors, who gathered around the poor ditty, in a common effort to erase any trace of dirt from her sullied image. The ancient Romans said that in order to keep a nation happy, you need to give them bread and circus. And if there isn't enough bread, at least give them a lot of circus. Plane crashes do not qualify as circus, but petty scandals do. Therefore, I believe soon enough the public will forget about the crashed plane. We have an inborn tendency to get over things, no matter how grave they are, without learning anything from them. At most, in half a year, there will be a documentary on National Geographic about the crash, and we will watch the reenacted disaster from the safety of our living rooms and shake our heads murmuring "the poor folks", as mechanically as asking for another round at the local bar. But the image of the millionaire wife chased off from the TV show will stay with us for months.

Yes it's true unfortunately that situations like this will always be with us. I'm a pragmatist and I know all too well about witnessing human nature. The juicier the scandal will keep people coming back every time! And tragedies are just that, people don't want to focus on them! Because it's just too hard!!!

I gave up reading newspapers. They are geared to selling paper, not providing accounts of the news. I jumped off the bandwagon.
