Description


The Great Grey Owl was first described by Johann Reinhold Forster in 1772. And has a variety of names the latin name of Strix nebulosa The "nebulosa" part is derived from the Latin "Nebulosus", meaning misty or foggy. The Great Grey Owl has also been called Great Grey Ghost, Phantom of the north, Cinerous Owl, Spectral Owl, Lapland Owl, Spruce Owl, Bearded Owl and Sooty Owl. Of interest is that Forster a German naturalist of partial Scottish descent who made contributions to the early ornithology of Europe and North America. He is best known as the naturalist on James Cook's second Pacific voyage. Thanks for taking time to view and for any comments etc you care to make full size recommended
