Description

Stopping in to say hello and to tell you a story. And Happy Fathers Day to all the fellas!!! Awhile back I told you about the path I walk through where I find some of the things in my shots. You helped me to identify the mulberry tree that was there and some of my florals came from there. At the end of that walk there was a house being built on the vacant lot, built by Habitat For Humanity, (in fact across the street from where the car hit our property a couple weeks ago)...I was very excited to see them in the neighborhood because it meant the possibility of a 'nicer' neighborhood. Now I am not so sure I approve of them at all and in fact am pretty angry at them...This same area is where I said the groundhog lived, keyword 'lived'. I have watched for a few weeks now as they cut down and tore out well established trees, one being the mulberry and also the grapevine that was there. I understand topping trees and keeping them trimmed but do not understand the need to just cut them down. The tree with the exposed roots that I said was the entrance to the groundhogs home is still there but the entire backside of it has had the branches removed and all the activity there has caused the groundhog to lose its home, many birds and squirrels are now without their habitats as well. The path that teemed with activity is now very quiet. If this is progress I can live without it! Fortunately the groundhog has found a new home temporairily anyway...I will have to call a wildlife agency because as you can see, the 'pair' that I thought was only one, has now had a family! Under the house of my neighbor and they eat and play in the yard between our houses. This is not safe for them:-( We are too near a busy street, too many dogs and feral cats run here and I fear for the babies lives. The babies are about the size of a 3-4 month old kitten. They are simply adorable and I love watching them play but I have no way to protect them so I will call someone on Monday. And I am sending an editorial to the local newspaper and an email regarding the matter to Habitat For Humanity! I just think they should give some thought to what an area might contain before they start tearing it down...All those trees etc. were at the back of the property against the old fence. Hope you enjoy the babies! Will try to catch up on a few comments today and tomorrow. Thanks for looking and for previous comments and favs!

It's a sad fact that they may have torn up the trees to actually 'get rid' of the wildlife in the first place. Some humans consider it a nuisance. Of course, the planet considers humans a nuisance and is planing a clearance very shortly. Back in the world of global development, it's always Groundhog Day. The Groundhogs call it Ground Zero Day.

You make a seriously surprising point! i would follow through and maybe even ask if there are othere cases like this where wildlife is displaced for the convenience or asthetic....: (

What a sad report accompanying the collage. It is sad to see the effect we animals have on nature. Makes one wonder who is the more intellectual species on earth...

A habitat for for humans is impoverished if it doesn't include our fellow creatures, as we both know. We have various laws here which unfortunately vary from county to county, but there are many vigilant organisations, thankfully. Well done, Lynn, for standing uo for the groundhogs!

Great shots Lynn! Sadly, unless it's a newsworthy endangered species, most companies tend to ignore the issue. It's sad.

This seems to be happening all over. They keep building here & foxes, birds etc are loosing their homes. Then peolpe complain when the animals come into their gardens, it was theirs before ours. Hope the little family are ok. Lovely pic.

These are great shots. Unfortunately some things seem to have a double edged sword. In order to make room for humans it sometimes forgotten that there are other living creatures that will be displaced. Hopefully the wild life agency will be able to help.

Lynn these are great photos of the little guys and I couldn't agree with you more as I worry about little critters like that when they are displaced. I think people should make the effort to go in and check out what is living in a area first and see what they can do to adapt or relocate them instead of just plowing it all down.
