Description

Lake Crescent is located west of Port Angeles on the Olympic Peninsula. It was carved out by glaciers during the last ice age about 8,000 years ago. It has a maximum depth of 624-ft (average 300-ft) and is one of the deepest lakes in the State of Washington. It is about 12 miles long and the road (highway 101) follows along its southern shore for the entire length. After leaving Port Townsend and driving back to highway 101 while approaching the intersection of highway 20 with 101 I had a clear view to the left and there was no traffic. But nevertheless, I came to full stop anyway. Once I turned right (west) in the direction to Port Angeles, I saw a cop about 100 yards to the west, off the highway, watching traffic through binoculars. What he was looking for, were people not making a full stop and a chance to make some money. I had originally planned to stop for some seafood at Port Angeles, but realized that I was running late. I did stop along the shore of Lake Crescent and take several pictures. After that I basically just drove. The road is not as cluttered on the west side of the peninsula, mainly forest. I gave some thought to taking a picture of Destruction Island, but the lighting conditions and the foreground weren't to my liking. In Aberdeen, still a pretty good distance away from I-5, I called Tara and gave her a situation report. By now it was about 18:00 and we had planned to meet and get something to eat. Traffic on I-5 northbound wasn't too bad, the peak of rush hour seemed to have been over and Tara gave me directions to her house. We went to a nice seafood restaurant in Edmonds, right by the waters edge. On the way over Tara got a demostration of how my radar detector works. I was pointing out to her that there seemed to be a cop out ahead of us, and here they were, two motorcycle cops trying to make some money. Once at the restaurant we got a nice table by the window, overlooking the beautiful evening sky and Puget Sound. Tara had requested this seat by pointing out that 'her out of state friend had never seen water', or words to that effect. Tara treated and I splurged. Oysters on a half shell. When I first developed a taste for them in 1970 they were a dozen for one dollar. Now you can consider yourself lucky if you can get one oyster per dollar. In any case, we had a wunderful time and agreed to meet the following evening again. This picture was taken on 21 May 2009. Thanks for viewing, commenting, and any favs, Sig...

Am enjoying your travel log Sig. Appears you've got the traffic cops figured out pretty good. A month ago I got the first speeding ticket I've gotten in the last ten years...three blocks from my house. I was relaxed and off guard:-) For those of you from outside the USA, no the police really aren't too bad...just have to be vigilant. Lesson Learned: Don't relax your guard even three blocks from your own house:-) I was only doing 43 in a 30 zone!

I used to love to drive along Lake Crescent when I lived in Port Angeles. It's such a beautiful place! It's only 624 feet deep? I'd always heard it was bottomless (among other amazing stories)! Gorgeous shot.
