Description

I had been chasing this butterfly around the garden for a few days as I was unsure of what type it was and excited by the possibility it may be the Black Veined White if so then very rare here in the UK. A heavy dew came to my rescue, as it took shelter early in the morning. This large butterfly became extinct in the UK around 1925, its last remaining stronghold in the south-east of England. The cause of its demise is a mystery since its foodplants can be found in abundance in all of its former localities. This butterfly has one generation each year and, where it exists, forms distinct colonies.
