It was very clever, I think, to add perspective via the contrails and elongated orientations of the two sky ships. Without these, the image is reduced by the fog to flatness. The two sky ships also sustain the off vertical rotation of the image. Otherwise, the "leaning" spires and their RubeGoldberg constructions would look overly precarious.
