Description

"Attacked by Hurricanes...?" Its an easy mistake to make at night... On the early, early morning of 29th of July 1942, the pilots of two P39 Airacobras, assisted by the full moon and searchlights, met the latest probe by Kawanishi H8K2 flying boats against the defences of Townsville in North Eastern Australia. While evading the lights and the impromptu night-fighters, the lone "Emily" (think: small frigate with wings) jettisoned its bombs into a mud flat... and a coconut palm. The fighters got a bead on the big flying boat anyway (some accounts say they used up all their ammo on it!) but true to form, the "Emily" just kept on flying... I've been developing my H8K2 model off and on over the last couple of months and thought its about time it had a preliminary outing of a texture idea- with the novelty of a midnight dogfight. The background and searchlights were rendered in Bryce 6 (and it took ages to render!). The models were rendered in Poser 6, and the P39 has had a prop-blur object substituted for its propeller. Post-work (tracers etc) in Painter 8.

Great image! Fabulous model! True. It took a lot of serious firepower to down one of those Flying Boats. Much like the Short Sunderland. The Germans nicknamed that, 'The Flying Porcupine'! Speaks for itself! Rob.
