Description

This posting goes hand-in-hand with Rob's Balloon Buster: Click Here It looks like my two observers are in a heap of trouble with the Fokker Dr. I bearing in on them and their balloon. Please ZOOM. The two WWI US Army observers in the wicker basket are hanging under a Caquot Type R Observation Balloon. Tethered balloons allowed both sides to observe enemy at distances up to 40 miles - when filled with hydrogen gas, this type of balloon could lift two passengers along with charting and communications equipment to a height of up to 4,000 ft - nearly 1,000 Caquot balloons were made in the United States in 1918-1919. Thanks for stopping by, Bill:) P.S. This display with the full-sized balloon overhead is in the WWI display area of the US Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio.

Don't think I would have liked to be in this in the war, with planes after me? Bet they felt vunerable.

Most of Rickenbacker's confirmed "kills" were against German observation balloons. Great paired pics, Bill.

I live 30 mile from Dayton and have never been to the museum, that is a shame because some of this you have been showing from there I would love to see...excellent image!

Wow! These are very cool, but the last place I'd want to be during a war. Seems like they'd be as flimsy as a recumbent bicycle on a freeway, and easier for an enemy to spot.

Stellar clarity under rather adverse lighting conditions, Bill. Love that wicker basket. As sitting ducks hanging under a hydrogen gas-filled balloon, I'd say the men were in one big heap of trouble, for sure. I never knew that so many Caquot balloons had been manufactured. A facet of WWI I was barely familiar with. Balloonists were also used during the Civil War.

"Simpatico"...you and Rob have been treating us with your 'Grand Tour' shots. However this combined posting is brilliant.I've always liked the Dr.1, ever since I read a book on the 'Red Baron'.You've got to admire the guy's who went up in these rickety baskets..This is just a great image and combines with Rob's wonderfully.
