Description

I see and/or hear a fair number of Robber Flies on a regular basis. It is one of the noisiest flying insects I am familiar with. They will often sit still even if approached closely but at other times, they are very skittish. They will often return to the same perch repeatedly so a little patience will usually be rewarded with a usable shot. They attack their prey from above and skewer them with their long "beak". They inject an enzyme that breaks down body tissue, then suck the juices out. This is the first of three Robber Fly images in a short series. These 3 images include two different species.
