Description

Tara and I were on our way back across the Northern Cascades on highway 20. I commented on 'all that snow' and she explained to me that this snow was the remains of an avalanche. She pointed out the tree and rock debris. We were about 3 to 4 miles east of the summit of Washington Pass (5,477-ft). As we came closer and the highway zigzagged up, we could see other remains of avalanches that had crossed the meandering roadway. As we got near the summit we found out that an avalanche had just come down within the last 15 minutes or so and blocked the roadway. Initial estimate for clearing the road was 8 hours. I had taken the posted picture at 17:27. We were forced to turn around and go further south across Stevens Pass, because I was concerned about making it back on time and don't miss the ship the next day. This also was a great drive, especially driving through Leavenworth, where everything except the name was German, or so it seemed. This picture was taken on 23 May 2009. Thank you for viewing, commenting,, and favs Sig...
