Description

For All: Back to Dayton to the Presidential Aircraft Gallery. "Colunbine III" was President Dwight D. Eisenhower's presidential aircraft between 1954 and 1961. Please ZOOM to see it really shine. Mrs. Eisenhower christened this Lockheed VC-121E Columbine III in honor of the official flower of Colorado, her adopted home state, in ceremonies on Nov. 24, 1954. Columbine III served as the presidential aircraft until President Eisenhower left office in January 1961. It remained in service transporting government officials and visiting foreign dignitaries throughout the world until it was retired to the museum in 1966. ...... For Aviation Enthusiasts: The C-121 is the military version of the famed Constellation commercial transport. During World War II, the Army Air Force (AAF) purchased 22 early model Constellations, which were designated C-69s, and between 1948 and 1955 the USAF ordered 150 C-121s for use as cargo and passenger carriers, executive transports and airborne early warning picket ships. This aircraft on display in the Presidential Aircraft Gallery was the only VC-121E built. SPECIFICATIONS: Span: 123 ft. Length: 116 ft. 2 in. Height: 24 ft. 9 in. Armament: None Engines: Four Wright R-3350s of 3,400 hp each PERFORMANCE: Maximum speed: 330 mph Cruising speed: 255 mph Range: 4,000 miles Service ceiling: 33,600 ft. Thanks for stopping by, Bill:)

Great collage, Bill! I can see where you be torn about single post or the collage look. I would have gone for the large top Photo and a small inset of the nose art..... (idea to self!) But as for the collage? It certainly is mega shiny! Catches the eye well. That is the main idea. I liked this plane. Well done. Rob.

Ah-h, the curvaceous Constellation. Shape of the fuselage and three-rudder tail are signatures. Flew in one from Seattle (SEA/TAC) to Anchorage in early 1956, and in another San Francisco to Las Vegas in 1957 ("Gamblers Special" price $9.00 one-way). Comfortable airplane.

OMG, I used to work on the Constellation when I was employed at Lockheed in Burbank, CA, so many decades ago. Brings back memories. There are stellar POVs, lighting effects and reflections in this wonderful collage, Bill! This aircraft is just as spittin' polish shiny as Frank Borman's F-86 Saber over in Chino.
