Description

40th for GL and 75th anniversary for FG - for this year's SDCC book - the first in full color. My 'puter was broke for 3 weeks and I had mebbe 4 days to pull this together when I got it back - that really doesn't excuse the fact it's not very good...

This was not accepted for the souvenir book this year. They had a last minute change to the themes and eliminated the 75th anniversaries of newspaper strips from the art themes because of some copyright problems; my actual submission had the words "Hal Jordan:Green Lantern for the Guardians of the Universe" and didn't identify Dale and Flash at all. They didn't buy it. The GL figure was mostly recycled from the figure of Jase in another unaccepted SDCC submission for Space Ghost a few years ago, although I needed 2 renderings to get both the shiny and matte sections of his costume (originally planned to be a 1930s take on his uniform, as this was supposed to be a Flash Gordon serial poster from that era). Dale and Flash were slightly reworked Buck and Wilma from the Buck Rogers poster. Although I wasn't happy with the finished product, I am dissappointed that I didn't get into the first full color SDCC souvenir book...

beautiful work brother. Just a note - You are aware of how to do both matte and shiny in one render right? Overall, except for GL's glasses, this rocks hard. You could have used the original GL instead of the modern day one, which might have worked in better with this image.

Yeah, I just couldn't achieve the extremes of matte and shiny that I wanted using the conventional methods. The anniversary was 50 years of the modern GL - Hal Jordan appeared in 1959 - so using golden age GL wouldn't have worked. Initially, this was to be a golden age version of silver age GL, looking all 30s sci-fi, but logic (why have equipment belts and aviation gear when the ring is the all-in-one toolkit?), art avarice (can't cover up the cool shiny effect/cool muscles with paraphenailia) and deadline pressure led to only the aviator goggles being retained in place of his traditional domino mask. And even those look wrong.
