Description

As Australia has a warm climate, we never get snow or ice on even the coldest days of the year. So when a visiting circus comes to town with their very own portable ice rink.....well we jump at the chance to give it a go! As an ice skater, your average Aussie makes a great surfer!!! We had no idea. The only move we could master was falling 'butt' first onto the ice. As everyone fumbled and fell around with laughter, an elderly man quietly approached the rink. And wait for it....he had his own skates!! He went around that rink like Brian Boitano on steroids. He was grace personified. And the coolest thing was, he had that slight smirk on his face that showed he was secretly loving showing us all how it was done! He told us he was from NY and had only recently moved to OZ. He told us the best days of his childhood were spent ice skating. Like Holden Caufield, I too started to again wonder where the ducks from Central Park went in the winter! We all watched every move he made, trying to copy his every maneuver. Without his encouragement, a great deal less of us would have had the confidence to leave the safety of the wall. He was king that day...and my backside is still cold!

What a great story. I am originally from a town about 25 miles east of New York City and grew up hoping for the nearby pond to freeze quickly so we could hit the ice. Good photo...ice skating takes a lot more ankle strength than roller skating...I unfortunately never got real good at it as the ankles gave out before my enthusiasm.

I'm grinning from ear to ear as I read this--- I grew up in Arizona and that's the ONLY place I ever ice skated!! I love how you give the man his crown; he WAS the king that day and you honored him. How fun for everyone!!

Looks like they are having a great time I tried ice skating one time if they made a butt skate I would have done fine, LOL. Excellent capture!!!

We have year-round ice rinks here, but I've never been on ice skates! Imagine that. I guess it's never been special, like it would be if it were a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I love the story about the gentleman from NYC! I bet he was in his element. Thanks for sharing this!
