Description

Hello Happy Artist! This is the Prometheus; a standard type cruiser model that I put my poor system in the tank a many-O-times just to create. Now, there is a little bit of history behind this that I care for you to read if you have an extra minute or two. The main reason for this particular model was out of an over-heightened sense of insult that I recently received from a 3-D model site that I stumbled upon. After following a link, which took me to another link, and then another, I found this site (which shall remain nameless through this posting) that sold models for Bryce and other 3D software media. Now, in the ad was a decent looking spacecraft; not the kind you might expect in your next Sci-Fi thriller, but a decent one nonetheless. That--Happy Artist now turned Reader--is not what set me off. What did irk me to no end was the advertisement heading which stated in verbatim: “You Can’t Do Real Modeling in Bryce So Get One of Ours!” Yeah…Wow! Read it again if you can’t believe the gall of some people. So finding calm breath after a cig or two, I gave the ad the digital finger and then went to work; modeling whatever came into my noggin. So here it is, proof that no one can do real modeling in Bryce: The Prometheus. Yes indeed, Mr. Arrogant Website, you are correct. I couldn’t do it and I ended up modeling slop, and I should definitely spend the little money I have on your product. What was I thinking? I should be flogged. To end this, anyone who has used Bryce for a while (I have used it since version 2 a LONG time ago), you know quite well that Bryce has it’s limitations which can be more than a creative-spirit killer, but for those like Mr. Website out there, and those who work in Bryce and get discouraged, let me leave you with this: The program has limitations; the Human Imagination does NOT! Done with Bryce 6.0, no post other than resizing and name stamp with PhotoShop. Additional note! I will probably repost each angle separately at a much larger size so one can get a better view of the detail (and there is a lot of it). There was a time when one could post 3 images daily here, but that is now long gone and currently (as Chicago continues through its dead job market), I cannot spare the money for a paid account. That will be rectified, once the employment thing has been first. Peace and Hair Grease ;) DeMaGo

well, although I don't model in Bryce (Wings 3d), I have used it since about version 4. If you need a good background with depth, it's right on the money. Occasionally I'll use it for the purpose for which it's inteneded...;) but I won't give up on it... There is a 'level' of 'artists' out there who bash Bryce (but not half so much as Poser...;) for, well, I guess not being expensive enough. Great modeling, keep 'em coming.

Very nice model. Aint nothing but a thing, my friend. They obviously don't know much about Bryce, so its only their ignorance speaking. I know a few artists here at Rosity that are superb Bryce modelers.

What I see here looks very good!Bryce may not have the modelling capability of other, more expensive and involved programs, but if one is willing to take the time and effort you can create some amazing models with it...you may have to work harder, but I think it is capable of a lot more than the naysayers realize.Keep up the good work, and keep discovering!

Ouch! Whoever said that needs a good slap and dragging through the Bryce gallery.I'd love to know what site it was. Nice modeling though!

This is amazing Bryce work for sure! No way a naysayer cannot be forced to take a second look. I am sad to read what the site was advertising as far as negativity regarding Bryce as a modeler, but I will not sugarcoat anything. The developers of Bryce need to get as angry as you did when they read such things. In truth I agree fully that Bryce is hardly the most efficient modeling tool available today and to pretend that it is even for a second, is a disservice to Bryce in the long run. Surely you will take offense to my comments but I make them anyway. Sorry to say it but the point is fully valid. The developers need to get with the program in terms of modeling tools, it is not the fault of the userbase. It's like alot of bryce uers are waiting until the Bryce developers decide it is time for them to learn a new tool. Just because I love Bryce overall does not mean I will pretend it is not light years behind in modeling tools. There is no real benefit in playing games with my own mind. I say it over and over because people need to understand that even the most advanced Bryce models are merely mediocre by cad standards in terms of detail and accuracy. Just have a look at the modo, cinema4d, lightwave, maya, Carrara galleries and observe the true detail of those models! Nurbs for pillows and the like. Bryce ain't got it. There is a whole world outside of Bryce only thinking and it's limitations. When compared to the rest of the world, Bryce does not emerge on top as a modeler. This is not bias, but a simple fact when you hold bryce to the same standards as other modeling apps. I think we sometimes make special exception for Bryce renders as if they were in a safety bubble and never compared directly pixel for pixel with other apps And I will not allow anyone to conceive of my comments as anti Bryce. I think we should use Bryce for what is is best at, rendering. Yesh, maybe a 6foot 7 guy CAN do a backflip if he works hard at it, but everyone knows that OLYMPIC LEVEL gymnasts are better when they are short instead of tall due to a lower center of gravity. There are always exceptions TO THE RULE, but lets not misunderstand an exception as the rule itself... I have been using Bryce for as long as anyone and learned long ago that cad modelers offer more tools and once mastered provide much faster and accurate results than booleans alone could ever provide. That is why professionals use cad modelers, not Bryce. Cad or vertex modelers are freeware nowadays so there is no reason why one should not experiment with them at one point or another just for fun. Sure booleans are a part of all modeling apps, booleans are a standard tool even in cad situations so mastering booleans is always a good way to go. But booleans alone are not the best tools for many tasks, rocket science is not required to grasp this basic concept. There is no way to apply UV mapping for instance, and working to exact scale is very tricky due to the way Bryce initiates Bryceunits, they don't relate to feet or meters at all. So I would say Major Bravo to you you are exceptional. There are a few individuals such as yourself who have the patience to use their imagination to figure out how to do certain things that do not come easily for Bryce. I do the same thing with faking ecosystems that they say bryce cannot do. But let's be honest here, for the vast majority of users, such detailed models as yours are simply out of reach. If not, there would not be such negativity toward Bryce in the CG community as a whole. People will use whatever works for them, Bryce will not be viewed by all in the same way. Remember that usually there is at least some shred of truth to said stereotypes. But in the end, the user decides what Bryce is capable of in their hands! Full marks and then some for incredible work that could not have been easy to accomplish in Bryce! One naysayer now shuts his mouth in awe! 5/5

Thank you all for your feedback, and I have actually, I felt bad leaving my long message. I am not one for political/argumentative comments, especially as a result of someone's ignorance. For that, I actually apologize. For your comments, they are very much appreciated and in the end, my statement warranted. I sit here with a thin smile full of warmth and gratitude. DeMaGo
