Description

Summer seems inordinately late in coming this year! Chicago has seen more rain that it has in years, though I can’t be certain on what actually happened here in the time of my absence. I don’t get the impression that rainfall during that time was particularly high. As a result of the rain, temperatures have not exactly soared into the muggy and uncomfortable levels that Chicago is known for. Because it’s been wet and cool—at times, downright cold—insects aren’t out in such prodigious numbers. I suppose that’s a good thing, since it means that whole squadrons of mosquitoes are flying around—though they’re coming! I’m sure of that. With this much moisture, and with so many standing puddles, breeding blood-sucking females have plenty of places in which they can establish their nurseries. With the absence of mosquitoes comes the absence of everyone else. Carpenter ants (and other members of the general ant breed) are out in force. But, as I’ve learned over the past few weeks, ants really don’t stay still long enough to be photographed. I suppose they would if I left bait for them, but alas…I’ve not been carrying packets of citrus-infused sugar around. I have, however, been able to catch a few flies: most of which I cannot identify. This coppery specimen is an example. It’s extremely tiny, and I was attempting to catch him (her?) at rest on the leaf of a decorative fig. Instead, I caught the little beauty in flight as he (she?) took off just as my camera flashed. As a result, this has gone straight into my “lucky shot” file, and it’s been coaxed out of that file so that I may post it here. As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting on this and my previous posts, and hopefully you're all having a great beginning of the weekend.

wow, that is such a cool macro! I love the way the light is reflecting off its shiny carapace, the perfect details in the wings, this is an extraordinary photo. What really makes this so beautiful, though is the harmony of the green leaves and the insect's body. Fantastic!

It's a great photo capture, Chip as you have caught the insect in flight rather than just resting on the leaf.

A great in-flight shot of this tiny creature. And did you notice there is a kind of cat-like face in the background? CC

Lucky shot indeed, that one is right out of National Geographic. I wonder what the shutter speed was since this little guy's (gal's?) wings are perfectly still in the frame. There doesn't seem to be any motion blur and I can see the veins clearly. I can even make out the fine hairs on its legs. Well done my friend.

Somehow I missed this one. To get a Long-legged Fly in flight is tough. To get it in focus is impossible. Awesome shot! Truly.
