Description

This is Edwina and she is a Mute Swan. She has built a nest, in the far corner, of a marsh near me. Only ducks have used this area for many years and people have not paid much attention to what goes on out there. But it was not hard to notice that the ducks were only at one end of the marsh and the other end was now clear of all water fowl. Swans are the largest members of the duck family and are amongst the largest flying birds, weighing up to 30 to 35 pounds (15 KG). Much larger than geese, in size and weight plus swans have larger feet and longer necks. As it turns out male swans are also very aggressive. Swans usually mate for life. The number of eggs in each clutch ranges from three to eight. Young swans are known as cygnets, from the Latin word for swan, “cygnus”. An adult male is a cob, from Middle English “cobbe” (leader of a group); an adult female is a pen. Some information from Wikipedia. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous comments & favs. Dana

Lovely pic. We have lots of swans on the park, we steer clear. We had one male who protected his female, she had one wing, they reared young every year until he died because of fishing tackle!!!!!! She was left to the elements, other swans were trying to drown her, it was awful to see. We contacted the RSPCA but they didn't want to no, she wasn't bleeding you see. Eventually a few of us called a swan rescue & with our help they rescued her one night, it took ages. What a relief when she was captured & to see her going off to her new home. We were sent pics of her, she had gone to a new private lake with a new mate.
