Description

As weekend custom seems to dictate, Corey and I were wandering around, looking for interesting things to photograph. There are so many monstrously large condo stacks in this city now. There are old buildings here that stand with quiet dignity along whatever streets you may find them. But within the past decade, newer, flashy, and ultimately less eye-friendly buildings have sprouted like strange, angular fungi of dubious (and possibly poisonous) pedigree. Of the newer buildings, this obvious condo-stack is one of the more interesting. It is monolithic in so many ways. Older buildings crouch (almost gargoyle-like) around it. Many of them crumble, or stand nearly-forgotten by all but those who dwell (or work) in them. This monolith, however, bears some distinction. It avoids Chicago's traditional loathing of primary colors. I was struck by the cloudless blue sky and the yellow portion of this behemoth, crowned (as it is in three spots) with a shade of red that resembles an over-ripe fire engine. I was amused that the colors I saw were all primary colors, and something in the clean lines of the building kept my attention for longer than most such structures can manage. As always, thank you for viewing and reading and commenting, and hopefully you're all having a great week.

Oh,you KNOW I love this one--full of color and simply jumps out and makes you look. A huge contrast to the gray, boring, monster buildings it sits among!!

What a superb composition you made! It makes a most attractive image, but I should hate to live there. That mean little balcony from which to throw oneself could be quite handy in a sudden moment of urban desperation. Unless it's closer to the ground than it looks!

What a fabulous image! The strong graphic, the bold colors ... it reaches out and grabs one by the throat (in a really good way). :P Love it!

Lego blocks! Fantastic find, Chip; a building as designed by a small boy! And yes, the colors are remarkable!

In Calif buildings (and homes) come in all colors, but I never imagined there would be a bright yellow and red building in Chicago. Amazing. And superb contrast against the sky. CC

Very striking, indeed! I can see why you'd be fascinated by it. It's almost as if someone has transported an alien into the center of Chicago. You photo does a great job of emphasizing the bold colors and simple shapes.

Perhaps it's colored thus to make finding one's way home easier for the tenants, or their visitors. Yeah,...I live in the big horizontal banana complex with the three big red pimples up top, you know, the one with the small community balcony, you can't miss it! It certainly makes a bold statement!! I love the pure blue sky, any clouds would have definitely detracted from this shot.

The first thing this photo brought to mind was the old Lakeshore Motel, just off the QEW and Lakeshore Boulevard in New Toronto. Up until recently the squat little highway rest stop shared one of the best views of the city with commuters. The entire downtown core (including the CN tower) was revealed in a sweeping scene perched on the blue water of Lake Ontario. Twice as spectacular at night of coarse because the city lights were reflected off the lake. Now this location is a nest of condo towers that have greedily stolen the grandest view of the entire city for themselves and their well healed occupants.
