Description

I'm sad to say that this one didn't make it :( The nest was in a smaller Blue Spruce in our yard, at about five feet, not nearly high enough to keep the predators out. I don't think any of the chicks survived in this brood, there is still one egg in the nest, but I think the parents long ago abandoned it. Had I known more about hatching eggs, I may have been able to save one or two of these chicks. Which brings me to my dedication to Tom. He has been spending time photographing at a Raptor center that saves injured birds. Allowing the center to use his photos for a presentation. A very honorable use of time and resources. Many animal lovers are posting at Renderosity and I would plead with all of you to take the time and resources you have to get passionate about your favorite animal and "do" something. Whether it be time volunteered, a small donation, or the offer to take some pictures for free, "DO" it. Think of it as making this place a better world... Thanks for lending an ear, Tom, best of luck to both of us in our pursuits to better this world for our animal friends!

Kim, thanks so much for the dedi. Getting involved grabs hold and will not let you go. I told the founders of the raptor center that if I sold any images from my first exhibit in a nice little cafe, they would get the proceeds over my costs. They told me the money was not so important as the publicity. It was a very small amount in money but apparently a large amount in publicity. Someone from a local weekly saw the exhibit and the portion which was given to birds of prey. The paper put a couple of images on their front page and apparently many folks saw that. Yikes, the publicity was generated in a much larger scale than my actual exposure would suggest. Why all of this? Because you are working with the wild horses. Because anyone who is willing to get photos of animals and places in need might find a way to bring those images to others. Because, well, because so much is needed in this earth in the small ways we can responsibly assist. Thanks again for the dedi. Sorry this one did not make it but nature must be accepted as it is, which is not a woods full of Bambi and friends. The photo is very nice and tells much of this little bird. The down on its body is not much different from that seen on a baby barn owl. Thank so much. You are an encouragement I hope to be the same for you. Tom

I couldn't agree more with you. I have done rescues of so many animals and birds of all ages. Some were successful, others not. But I did what I could and I learned and studied about each one and my care improved. I am best now with song birds and soft billed birds...raptures are a bit out of my league ... but with each animal I work with, I find a little more peace with who I am. This is awesome work. I feel badly for the nest but even the preditors have to survive. It is nature's way.
