Description

Here is where these seaplanes arrive and depart. Its a busy place since these kinds of aircraft are an important means of transportation in Alaska. This picture was taken on 26 May 2009. Thank you for viewing, commenting, and favs, Sig.... I will comment shortly.

Familiar pic; I have Kenmore Air's Seaport at the bottom of my hill. The approach to the "runway" has them coming in from the ENE at about eye level... really sucks... ;')

Here is a story the tour guide in Juneau told us: The airport is next to a fjord and aircraft that take off will be over water right after they lift off. The fjord is also where a lot of bald eagles fish. The story, as told by the tour guide is as follows: A bald eagle caught a fish, kind of big, and he had trouble gaining altitude. At the same time a small commercial aircraft took off from the runway toward the fjord. The eagle saw the plane coming and dropped the fish to gain altitude. The aircrafts pilot heard a thump and returned to the airport. Upon investigating of the possible cause of the thump he reported to his passengers that they have had a mid-air with a fish. A real Alaska story.

Excellent photo! Looks like radial engines are the in thing for the heavy bush work. The planes with the radial engines are all de Havilland Beavers. The US Army flew them for years. They were produced from 1947-1967. The fact that so many are still flying testifies to their value.

WOW - 2 C185s, 3 Turbo Otters and E-I-G-H-T Beavers (and a Piper Something)! The Otters are the Beaver's big brother and used to be round motor powered.
