Description

The next three seasons, Edwina and Fred only had two or three eggs per year – all hatching. Those three years were enjoyable but Fred did keep Edwina and the cygnets away from the shoreline. Fred was a different story, as we became “friends”. By now I had a special whistle that I would use to let him know I was there. He never swam directly to me. It was an agonizing long zig-zag trip across the marsh. But he did come and that was progress. As the cygnets grew (and the old ugly duckling story was so true) they would come in close to be feed. Fred would become aggressive during those times. Yes he did bite and chase me in the early years. Read Wayne (Whaleman) and Barbara’s (Jendellas) comments from the “PART 2” posting. At the end of each season, there was the battle between Fred and his grown children. He fought to drive them out of “his” marsh. One by one, as autumn approached, they would take flight and head south for the winter. And eventually, all were gone. This brings us, to the summer of season five and tonight’s posting. As you can see there were eight cygnets that year and with a lot of coaxing, Edwina swam to within five feet of me, to “introduce” her family. I have to admit that I got a little misty until Fred bounced into his protection mode and was in my face. Thanks be that they are Mute swans. A few pecks and I backed up only a few inches and that made peace for that day. It was a very memorable day. I have to thank Sig (Junge1) one more time for the inspiration to scan my old photos. Stories like these help make us realize how intelligent our many creatures really are! Birds are so adept at evaluating threats to their young, and accepting us when they feel unthreatened. Thanks for a great story and go do some more scanning of old negatives!

She looks so proud of her cygnets. Haven't been round our lake lately so don't know how many there are this year. Someone came & put markers on the powerlines as when the cygnets started to fly they crashed into them. Proplem seems to have been solved, thankfully.
