Description

Very often we as wildlife photographers tend to zoom in on our subjects to show you the flea on the elephant's situpon. What we forget is that you could most probably look at a similar flea through your own camera lens in a zoo. In the past I have received very positive feedback if I did include some of the natural surroundings in a wildlife image. And this is what I hope to bring you with this image! I have captured it in the Thorny Bush Private Game Reserve here in South Africa one morning just after sunrise. We were on a game drive and came upon a pack of 6 adult hyenas who were feeding on an antelope about 40yrds from the road. The sound of bones cracking in the quiet early morning was quite daunting. Although hyenas are mostly scavaging their meals from bigger hunters (lions, leopard and cheetahs), they have hunted this antelope themselves. This fellow already fed and was probably on his way to water. The red on his face is from the antelope's blood. Yikes! Hope you enjoy the surrounding bush and long to be there just as much as I do!! Thank you for you kind comments and favs on my upload of The Twins yesterday! Hugs, Carin xx

So many colors, so many moods! Hardy African creatures telling a story of tenacity and perseverance despite the popular image of cowardice.

Hyenas are so fascinating and I am equally fascinated that they hunted their meal here. The vibrant color of the meal and the rising sun converge so perfectly. Stellar work, Carin! And enthrolling!

fantastic shot Carin, I agree it is good to include a bit of the environment to help tell a bit of the animal's story and it works soo well in this case, right the way up to that little patch of light at the end of the road... the depth of field is good, and your timing also to capture the pose.. excellent photo all round! =)

Strangely I don't think I have seen this one before Carin and it's definitely memorable. You have managed to actually make a hyena look kind of nice and almost cuddly which I haven't seen before either :)

I found this one at random and I have to say that I love it quite a lot. Hyenas are such weird creatures, oddly adorable in that "don't get too close" sort of way, and from what you've told me, they have a habit of inviting their buddies to barbecues, even though they are often not wanted at barbecues. This is gorgeous, and yeah, it's quite interesting to see that this one has been neck deep in hapless victim. What an alert expression this one has! I love seeing non-human people in their native environments; I get a more complete picture of a whole world, and I have to say, any world with hyenas in it is an interesting world indeed, since the only thing we have in Chicago that is even remotely-like a hyena are those human sorts of creatures called neighbors. They invite themselves to your barbecues too!

Wow! I like the way you captured him looking towards you. Nice shot!! I would think he is also heading for a quick clean up so he won't attract other hungry critters to his-self. . . ;p
